Vincent Van Gogh's "A Starry Night" was the inspiration for this project. In that piece, Van Gogh did a wonderful job of showing lines, movement and color. For our project, we used tissue paper, permanent markers, and oil pastels to make a night sky. Then, we added a landscape, which I used a city skyline. I began this piece by finding different colors of tissue paper that I thought would look good together. I then cut out whatever pieces and shapes that I wanted and laid them on the black piece of paper. Once I had the tissue paper laid down, I glued the pieces down and started to think of a landscape that I wanted.
As an extension piece, I would present more artists to the class. There are so many unique artists out there with great work. The students could pick another artist and make a project similar to that artists work. If the students really enjoyed the "Starry Night" project, they could create another one using oil pastels or water colors. The movement that oil pastels and water colors are able to create really represent "A Starry Night."
